A cooper from Racine, Wisconsin prior to the war, Corporal John Held was 25 years old when he enlisted in the 26th Wisconsin on August 19, 1862. Largely made up of German immigrants or first generation Americans, the 26th assembled at Camp Sigel in Milwaukee to train. Here, the regiment adopted the name "The Sigel Regiment" in honor of German revolutionary Franz Sigel. Corporal Held served with the 26th until was killed in action outside of Atlanta, Georgia during the Battle of Peach Tree Creek on July 20, 1864. Courtesy of the Civil War Museum, Kenosha, WI.
